Despite the 5G spectrum auction, mobile internet speeds in Pakistan have not improved significantly, prompting concern at the highest level.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed displeasure over the situation and sought a comprehensive report from PTA on the issue.

Following the prime minister’s directive, PTA Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman provided a detailed briefing. He explained that telecom operators are currently in the process of importing 4G and 5G equipment to upgrade network infrastructure.

The installation of this equipment will begin once it arrives, a process expected to take several months.

According to the briefing, a clear improvement in internet speed is expected once infrastructure upgrades are completed.

The PTA chairman emphasized that better telecom infrastructure will directly enhance both 4G and future 5G performance. He added that with the rollout of 5G, the speed of existing 4G services will also improve significantly.

5G rollout to begin in major cities

In the first phase, 5G services will be launched in Islamabad and all four provincial capitals. This phased rollout aims to gradually expand high-speed connectivity across the country.

Prime Minister Sharif directed authorities to ensure the provision of high-speed internet to the public “at all costs.” He stresses that fast and reliable internet is essential for achieving the vision of a Digital Pakistan.

The premier also instructed PTA to strictly implement the targets set for telecom operators.

In response, the PTA chairman assured the PM that the authority will maintain effective checks and balances in its regulatory role. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that telecom companies meet their obligations and deliver improved services.
