According to reports from state media, allegations of nepotism were levelled against Maher al-Sharaa. He had been serving as secretary-general of the presidency in Damascus.
His initial appointment last year drew comparisons with the practices of the era of former president Bashar al-Assad and his father and predecessor, Hafez al-Assad.
Reports said that, under a presidential decree, former Homs governor Abdulrahman Badr Al-Din al-Ama, has been appointed in his place.
It is not yet clear what position Maher al-Sharaa will assume next. He is a medical doctor and has previously served as interim Health Minister of Syria.
