Turkish police found an explosive device under a vehicle belonging to a police officer scheduled to be on duty at a rally for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, state-run TRT network reported.

The device was found under the officer’s personal vehicle in southeastern Mardin province,  200 kilometers away from the rally in Siirt province, according to TRT, before the police officer traveled to the rally.

The device, discovered in the town of Nusaybin, was dismantled and defused by a police bomb disposal team, according to TRT.

An investigation has been launched into the incident after forensic experts scanned the device and police vehicle for fingerprints, it said.

Mardin police have begun investigating footage from security cameras around the residence of the police officer.

TRT accused the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) of the foiled attack on the Turkish president.

The PKK is an armed group designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara that has led a four-decade insurgency for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey
