Viral Video of Khawaja Asif Talking About Pakistan’s Crises Is AI-Generated

Authentic footage shows Defence Minister speaking at a healthcare event in Sialkot

 A video circulating on social media purportedly showing Defence Minister Khawaja Asif admitting that Pakistan is facing multiple internal crises and praising India’s progress has been found to be AI-manipulated.

The viral clip shows Asif allegedly discussing political instability in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while comparing Pakistan’s situation with India’s progress in technology, infrastructure and the economy.

However, a review of the original footage and analysis by multiple deepfake detection tools indicates that the remarks were digitally fabricated.

What does the viral video claim?

The video circulating on social media allegedly shows Khawaja Asif saying that Pakistan and India gained independence around the same time but have since developed differently.

In the manipulated clip, Asif is purportedly heard saying that Balochistan has “slipped out of our hands”, people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are concerned and residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir are protesting for their rights.

He is also shown allegedly praising India for its development in technology, infrastructure and the economy and questioning Pakistan’s democratic system and government policies.

The video was widely shared with captions claiming that the defence minister had acknowledged Pakistan’s “mounting internal crises” and called for accountability.

Authentic footage tells a different story

A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video traced the visuals to an event held in Sialkot on 16 August 2026, where Khawaja Asif attended the inauguration of a healthcare initiative.

The original footage shows Asif discussing Sialkot, its business community and development, as well as the Sialkot Medical City Limited project initiated by the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The authentic recordings of the speech do not contain the remarks about Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, AJK or India that appear in the viral clip.

Footage from the event was also published by multiple media outlets and appeared on social media accounts associated with Khawaja Asif.

Signs of AI manipulation

The viral video also contains several visual and audio abnormalities.

Asif's face appears unusually smooth and waxy in parts of the clip, while his speech has a robotic quality. Some of his lip movements also appear out of sync with the audio.

The video was analysed using several deepfake detection systems, including Hive Detect, NVIDIA Synthetic Video Detector and the Global Online Deepfake Detection System (GODDS).

Although the individual tools produced varying results, the combined analysis provided multiple indications of manipulation, particularly in the audio.

GODDS, which uses several AI detection models as well as human analysis, found that the audio was likely fake according to the majority of its predictive models. Its human analysts also identified apparent inconsistencies between the minister's lip movements and the sounds in the video.

An audio analysis further identified an unnaturally consistent speaking speed, a lack of normal breathing and mouth sounds, artificial background static and an unusual pitch, all of which are consistent with AI-generated or cloned speech.

Government also labels video fake

Pakistan's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and its fact-checking wing also labelled the circulating clip as fake, stating that the voice in the video was AI-generated.

This further supports the findings from the original footage and independent analysis of the viral videos.

Verdict

The viral videos of Khawaja Asif discussing Pakistan’s alleged internal crises and praising India are AI-manipulated.

The authentic footage shows the defence minister speaking at events in Sialkot and responding to questions about domestic political matters. The controversial statements attributed to him do not appear in the original recordings.

The second video, which allegedly shows Asif confirming the remarks, was also digitally manipulated.
